S is for Swale.
I had an elderly client who was having neighbor problems because every time she had sustained rainfall her topsoil would float down a steep slope and accumulate on said neighbors property. When the days of rain turned into weeks I suggested that we install a series of swales. She wanted ducks, chickens and a dog on her wishlist so I designed a duck pond at the very top of her front yard with the idea that the duck poop would flow over the edge and slowly fertilize the vegetable beds and fruit trees my crew had set up on the swales. Permaculture practitioners call this fertigation ( fertilize + irrigate). The swales and their corresponding mounds not only slow the water flow you are essentially catching and storing energy and the fruit trees and vegetable beds require less frequent watering.
